Nigerian champions Enugu Rangers have booked their place in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after overcoming Beninese side Sobemap FC 5-4 on penalties in a dramatic encounter in Lomé.
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their first preliminary-round tie at the Stade de Kégué on Friday, leaving the aggregate score level at 2-2 after both legs.
Rangers made a bright start and took the lead in the 22nd minute after Sobemap FC conceded an own goal. However, the hosts refused to give up and eventually found an equaliser with 25 minutes remaining.
With neither team able to find a decisive goal before the final whistle, the tie had to be settled from the penalty spot.
Rangers showed composure when it mattered most, converting their opportunities to secure a 5-4 victory in the shootout and keep their CAF Champions League campaign alive.
The result represents an important step forward for Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side, who will now face a much tougher challenge in the second preliminary round.
Rangers have been drawn against Algerian giants MC Alger, with the Nigerian champions set to face one of the continent’s most experienced clubs as they continue their quest for a place in the group stage.
