Brentford heaped further misery on Premier League champions Liverpool with a well deserved 3-2 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium. An emphatic midweek triumph at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League ended a sequence of four successive defeats in all competitions for the Reds – but it proved to be a false dawn as the weaknesses that have plagued Arne Slot’s side this season surfaced yet again. Michael Kayode’s lethal long throw exposed Liverpool’s shaky rearguard in the fifth minute, with Dango Ouatarra scoring from Kristoffer Ajer’s flick-on. Mohamed Salah came close to an instant response for the Reds, but he…

Sunderland climbed to second place in the Premier League (PL) table, coming from behind to stun Chelsea in a brilliant 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge, ending the Blues’ run of four straight wins in all competitions. Having made their best eight-game start to a PL season since 1999/2000, Sunderland were dreaming of going second in the table, but those aspirations were dealt a swift blow after just four minutes. Hitting the Black Cats on the counter-attack, Pedro Neto picked out Alejandro Garnacho, who raced down the left before pulling the trigger to drill a low strike through Robin Roefs’ legs, marking his first goal for Chelsea. The…
German champions Bayern Munich have extended the contract of coach Vincent Kompany to 2029, they announced on Tuesday, adding two years to his original contract which ran until June of 2027. Kompany took over as coach in the 2024/25 season, having previously managed Burnley in the English Premier League. He led the Bavarians to the German championship in his very first season, and followed it up by winning the Super Cup at the start of the current campaign. The club management praised Kompany’s work to date in the highest terms. President Herbert Hainer spoke of a “strong vote of confidence” and emphasised the…
Nottingham Forest have appointed Sean Dyche as their new head coach, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Forest accelerated their pursuit of Dyche after Ange Postecoglou was immediately sacked following Forest’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. The former Everton and Burnley manager, who was a youth player at Forest, will take charge of the club’s Europa League match against Porto on Thursday. Dyche who signed a contract until 2027, becomes Forest’s third manager of the season with Postecoglou succeeding Nuno Espirito Santo after the Portuguese fell out with owner Evangelos Marinakis and chief Edu Gaspar. The Englishman has been out of work since January after leaving Everton following a two-year…
Manchester United secured their first away win over Liverpool since 2016, with a 1-2 victory at Anfield. Having failed to win their previous eight Premier League away games, the odds were stacked against the Red Devils at Anfield. However, Ruben Amorim’s men got off to the best possible start, taking the lead after just 62 seconds. Bruno Fernandes played the ball out to the right to Amad Diallo and the Ivorian slipped in Bryan Mbeumo, who slotted past Giorgi Mamardashvili to score the second-earliest goal in this fixture’s Premier League history. Cody Gakpo restored parity for the hosts, tapping in Federico Chiesa’s cross with…
Erling Haaland continued his incredible scoring run by netting both goals in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Everton at the Etihad Stadium. Haaland scored a hat-trick for Norway during the recent international break and his second-half double against the Toffees at Etihad Stadium took his tally to 23 goals in only 13 games for club and country this season. The 25-year-old had been kept quiet in the first half but came alive with his first opportunity of the contest, powerfully heading in from Nico O’Reilly’s cross, before scoring again just five minutes later with a vicious low drive from Savinho’s cutback…
Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou was sacked on Saturday after just eight matches in charge – just minutes after a 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea. The Australian’s dismissal – 39 days after his appointment on 9 September – means Postecoglou’s stint at Forest is the shortest permanent managerial reign in Premier League history. The former Tottenham boss failed to win any of his eight matches in charge of Forest, with two draws and six defeats across all competitions. Forest recorded just one point from Postecoglou’s five Premier League matches in charge, leaving the side one point above the relegation zone…
Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Nottingham Forest 19 minutes after Chelsea thrash the club 3-0 at the City Ground. The 60-year-old departs after only 39 days and eight winless games after replacing Nuno Espirito Santo last month. The pressure was on Forest boss Postecoglou, who knew that failure to beat Chelsea would increase his chances of the sack. His side looked assured in the opening stages, and an unforced Chelsea error handed them a golden opportunity to take the lead through Elliot Anderson. However, instead of pulling the trigger, he elected to cut inside and was crowded out by white shirts. A Blues side missing…
Estevao Willian struck deep into stoppage time to give Chelsea victory and condemn Liverpool to a third successive defeat in a dramatic climax at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s winning goal, greeted with wild celebrations that ended with coach Enzo Maresca being sent off, was deserved but it was another bitterly disappointing outcome for the out-of-sorts Premier League champions. Moises Caicedo drew the first blood for the hosts after 14 minutes as he fired a rising 20-yard piledriver past Giorgi Mamardashvili, deputising for the injured Alisson. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot dropped £116m summer signing Florian Wirtz to the bench after losses…
Declan Rice netted his first goal of the season before Bukayo Saka added a second as Arsenal beat West Ham in manager Mikel Arteta’s 300th game in charge. Arteta named a midfield trio of Rice, Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze as he utilised the options in his squad after a £250m spend in the summer. However, that trio did not last for long with captain Odegaard substituted due to an injury, the third Premier League home game in a row that he has been withdrawn early. Martin Zubimendi was brought on and Rice was then pushed into a more advanced…
